Lena's Story
By Robin Marquand
Lena Woods has always known that strong family values and connections to other people are the central building blocks of her life. Lena feels that she can get more out of an experience when she gives to others, a gift of kindness that began very early in Lena’s life. Lena’s dedication to family and care for others is clear throughout every part of her life.
Lena was born to a large and loving family in Arkansas on November 14, 1940. With eight sisters and two brothers, Lena’s parents had to be stern in the raising of their children, especially so they could maintain an orderly household. When Lena was growing up, the four youngest sisters were all best friends, and had many fun times together. The four sisters loved to sneak over to their Grandpa’s house, where they would be delighted to many treats. Lena and her sisters would stay so long; their mother would often have to call them back home. Traditions at their home were wonderful and delicious too. She recalls the family dinners of “yummy corn, buttery lima beans," peach cobbler, and especially the bread pudding that Lena said was “just like bubble gum!” Meals helped the family bond and let them enjoy their time together.
As an adult, the real world awaited Lena, as she was bound to travel all over the world to see new things. With a friend, Lena explored Paris, France, where she saw the Eiffel Tower (and still has a mini version magnet on her refrigerator!) Rome, Italy, the Hawaiian Islands, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean.
