Tina's Story

Augustine Crawford, born on February 25, 1940, goes by the name Tina. She didn’t always love her name, but over time she grew to cherish it. And over time, Tina Crawford has faced numerous personal struggles – becoming a young mother, dealing with health and substance abuse issues – but these experiences have made her a stronger, wiser person with a lot to share for young Oakland residents.

Tina was born into a large family – fourteen siblings, to be exact. A self-proclaimed “neat freak,” she still has fond memories of the times spent with her brothers and sisters, who “showed [their] love.” They helped each other and were close allies during her childhood living in the “projects” of West Oakland. Her family provided a foundation of support that she relied on through some of her toughest times.

Every Sunday morning, they would pray together as a family which “instilled something in [them].” She admired her brother Alonzo who she said was “[their] Santa Claus,” because he was always helping everyone in the family. Family gatherings were one of the biggest highlights in her life, because she loved when they all came together to be with each other and celebrate.
