Our Oakland, with the Oakland Public Library and the Oakland Public Art Program, presented 'Stories Building Bridges' on Saturday, February 26th, 2011 at the brand new 81st Avenue Library in the heart of East Oakland at 81st and Rudsdale.

The dynamic community event celebrated everyone who helped make Our Oakland: Eastside Stories a reality -- story contributors, community and media partners, and volunteers and staff. Nearly 70 community participants, from individuals and families to CBO's, mingled, chatted and networked, and witnessed an amazing panel presentation of riveting and heartfelt testimonies about personal and community visions expressed through stories and partnerships on Our Oakland. Kudos and our gratitude to Fannie Brown, East Oakland community activist; Asha Beene of Satellite Housing; Daniel Gray-Kontar of Oakland Leaf-Youth Roots, Tram Nguyen of EnCompass Academy, and Leroy Gaines of ACORN Woodland Academy!

Stories Building Bridges also focused on bringing East Oakland locals together with educators and media and community groups, to bridge the digital divide by sharing media and technology resources, and tell an East Oakland story that reflects the community's proud assets as well as hopes and concerns. These connections sparked tremendous inspiration and dedication towards using the power of media and storytelling to help build a stronger, more positive community. This is exactly what Our Oakland Artistic and Project Director Rene Yung envisioned for the event and for Our Oakland: Eastside Stories, and we are thrilled!

We hope numerous new stories will bloom from these new connections, to catalyze new ripples of dialogue and positive change for the East Oakland community.

We want to thank event co-hosts East Bay Housing Organizations, Bay Localize/Take Back the Mic Bay Area, and Not In Our Town for their support, and the Open Circle Foundation for making Our Oakland community engagement possible.
