It is not where you are from, but who you are

East Oakland kindergarten teacher Malayphet Insixiengmey tells us how her experience as an immigrant inspired her to become a teacher and help her students see the possibilities beyond the typical media stereotypes for the community, and the violence they see everyday.

Our media partner Youth UpRising's young producers once again rose to the occasion producing this video at our second Community Storytelling Day.

Yes, it's who you are, and also, for those of us who may not live in Oakland, what attitudes we allow to develop about her (or anywhere, for that matter). I have always found Oakland, my sister city across the Bay, to be vibrant, colorful and alive. She has grown up to be a destination for me in my adult life, because of friends who live there and so much that she has to offer, whether cultural, gastronomic, musical, or her physical beauty. The video is a nice piece. I'm delighted to see pride in Oakland reflected in Ms. Insixiengmey's heart.
