Come see the Our Oakland Art Glass and Kiosk!
If you come into the 81st Avenue Library, you can’t miss the Our Oakland art glass – it spreads across the 65 foot wide, two storey-tall bank of clerestory windows in the main reading room, in shades of blues and greens. The art glass features Our Oakland’s thematic imagery of linked ripples symbolizing community interconnection and replenishment, and a stylized design of an elm leaf and seedpods, referring to the history of the Elmhurst district where the Library is located. The glass changes appearance depending on the time of day and the sky outside. On a sunny day, the glass casts soft, colorful reflections on the reading room walls, bookshelves, and floor, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere. The 81st Avenue Branch librarians have even been found to color-coordinate their outfits with the art glass!
A second Our Oakland artwork is the Interactive Pod around the corner from the self check-out counter. The Pod is our name for the interactive kiosk dedicated to the OurOakland website. The Pod installation features large, overlapping blue and aqua circles made of translucent cast acrylic, to reflect the Our Oakland ripple theme. Notice the ripple-circles set in the carpeting that you’ll stand on to play with the Pod!
The art glass and the Interactive Pod are part of an integrated public art project designed by Our Oakland’s Artistic and Project Director Rene Yung for the 81st Avenue Library. They are the result of over five years of planning, design, and coordination efforts and careful fabrication, so be sure to come by the 81st and check them out!
